1955 Pontiac Chieftain

Car History

The Pontiac Chieftain was an automobile which was produced by Pontiac from 1949 to 1958 and was the entry-level Pontiac in 1955, but the restored 1955 Pontiac Chieftain we have here at Adventure Classics looks anything but basic.

Fans of Pontiacs and American motoring history always take note of this car as the new 1955 Pontiacs, like this Chieftain hardtop coupe, had a new V8 called the Strato Streak V8, and modern '50s styling that was a turning point.

Engine & Drivetrain

When you open the hood you will see the iconic 1955 small block Pontiac new 287 cubic-inch V8 overhead valve engine that gave Pontiac a reputation for providing performance in the GM lineup.

Ours has that engine and it looks as nice as the day it left the dealership with its factory black air cleaner, blue and silver painted "Strato Streak" valve covers, factory blue painted block, heads, and intake, factory exhaust, and all other stock looking parts that give it such an authentic presentation as it pushes back the horsepower to the 4-speed Hydro Matic automatic transmission that sends the power to the ground.

The engine is installed in the very nice clean, painted, and detailed engine compartment.

Interior

The interior shows a similar level of restoration and is a factory correct redo that shows its authenticity in the restoration. The factory-correct two-tone silver & black coordinates with the exterior color to give this a nice flow inside and out.

It has a bench front seat and matching rear seat as well as the door panels and the headliner and the smooth cowl dash looks great as does all the factory gauges, the column shifter, the side vent windows, black carpets, and the artful steering factory Pontiac steering wheel.

Exterior

Our 55 wears a black & grey two-tone paint job that you will marvel at, and it remains an authentic appearance enhanced by the best in modern paint.

The chrome and brightwork is nice as is the chrome front and rear bumpers and the jet airplane-inspired hood ornament.

It matches nicely with the wide whitewall tires and the white within the bright hubcaps. The sheet metal remains in great shape with good gaps and doors that close and you can see a resemblance to its Chevrolet kin, the 55 Chevy.

Conclusion

This 1955 Pontiac Chieftain we have here at Adventure Classics, has a great legacy, great restoration, great "Strato Streak" engine, and is a Pontiac icon that looks even better than when it was new.
