Car History

In 1969, the Chevrolet Camaro was chosen as the Official Pace Car for the 1969 running of the Indianapolis 500 and as the Official Car of the '500' Festival. This was a repeat performance for Camaro since it had also been chosen as the 1967 Pace Car.

The 1969 Pace Car Replicas were designed to be visible and they were being Dover White RS/SS convertibles with Hugger Orange Z28 style stripes and orange houndstooth cloth seats. All were equipped with the recently released fresh air cowl hood and were RS/SS convertibles with white tops ordered under RPO Z11.

We have a restored first-generation 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Pace Car convertible here at Adventure Classics that looks as it did when it was new in 1969.

These were always white RS/SS convertibles with white tops ordered under RPO Z11.

Engine & Drivetrain

Our 1969 has what we believe to be the correct 1969 350 cubic inch small block Chevrolet factory engine that looks great sitting in the clean and detailed engine compartment.

The engine block, intake, and valve covers are painted in the correct Chevrolet factory orange paint with a 4-barrel carb, factory cast iron exhaust headers going back to dual exhausts, power steering and brakes, and is backed by a Turbo Hydro 3-speed automatic transmission and the 12-bolt rear end.

The engine sits in a nice detailed and painted engine compartment that looks as fresh as it did when it was new and it rides on factory Rallye wheels with chrome trim rings and caps and Firestone Wide Oval raised white letter tires that look like it would have back then too.

Interior

Our Indy Camaro has the only interior color the Pace Car Camaros had, the bright orange houndstooth cloth and vinyl front bucket seats and the matching rear seat and door panels, wood steering wheel, great factory dash with all the correct gauges including the factory 120 mph speedometer, Center Console with horseshoe automatic shifter and Tic-Toc gauge cluster, wood grain trim, push-button radio with speakers, and all of it looks as new.

Exterior

The Trim Tag verifies this 1969 has the correct Z11 code and the #50 Code Dover White paint on the exterior like it came with from the factory as an Indy 500 Pace Car Replica as well as the orange Z28 hood and deck lid stripes, orange D96 fender striping, and white rocker panels.

The required options with the Z11 package included the convertible top, D80 spoilers, YA1 deluxe seatbelts, ZJ7 rally wheels, ZL2 special ducted hood, Z22 Rally Sport front end, Z27 Super Sport, and Z87 custom interior (orange houndstooth code 720), and has the Chevrolet Camaro “Official Pace Car” decals and graphics on both sides.

Conclusion

This first-generation 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Pace Car Replica convertible we have here at Adventure Classics looks as it did when it was new in 1969 and is a rare and very collectible Camaro.

It would also be a great cruiser with plenty of power and is always a crowd pleaser wherever you take it to.
And oh what fun it is to drive with that top down.
