We have here at Adventure Classics a B5 Blue 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner Convertible for sale that is drop-dead gorgeous and verified as a “real'” Roadrunner by its Vin Code and Trim Tag.

The Plymouth Road Runner was a mid-size car with a focus on performance built by Plymouth in the United States between 1968 and 1980. The Road Runner was based on the Chrysler B platform, the same as the Belvedere and Satellite, as a back-to-basics mid-size performance car.

Plymouth developed the Road Runner to market a lower priced, basic trim model to its upscale GTX. They paid $50,000 to Warner Bros.-Seven Arts to use the Road Runner name and likeness from their Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner cartoons (as well as a "beep, beep" horn, which Plymouth paid $10,000 to develop.)

This Road Runner is one of 769 made with a Chrysler A833 23 spline 4-speed transmission and one of 27 identically made factory show cars.

All the show cars were optioned with the N96 Air Grabber Hood, the A31 Sure Grip 8 3/4 rear axle, P31 power windows, A01 Light group including fender mounted turn signals.

Engine & Drivetrain

This 1969 Plymouth Road Runner convertible is powered by a 1971 400 "230" casting block bored 30" over and a 3.91" stroke crankshaft added to make it 477 cubic inches.

The engine was built by world famous factory stock racer "Mr. Six Pack" Bob Karakashian at a cost of over $10k and includes an 800 cfm Edelbrock carb, MOPAR electronic ignition, factory HP manifolds with over 500 horse power.

It has the engine block, heads, and intake painted orange, the optional orange “Coyote Duster” Air Grabber air cleaner assembly air cleaner that opens with the throttle to let in the air, performance ignition and spark plug wires, factory cast iron exhaust H.P. headers, dual exhaust, Power Steering, Power Brakes, and more all sitting in a clean and detailed engine compartment.

The air cleaner is signed by the well know creator, Jack Smith, who has passed since and the four-speed transmission and H.D. rear rebuilt by Tony Moore the owner of Winners Circle in Michigan.

It rides on polished factory style aluminum 5-spoke mag wheels and redline tires for a period correct look and stance.

The chassis is just as clean, painted, and detailed as the rest of this car. When I say this is better than new, it really is a #1 car and restoration.

Interior

The new Legandary Interior was done by Kee Auto Top including the new glass rear window and Legandary convertible top boot. It features a super white set of front buckets with white headrests, a rear bench seat trimmed in white vinyl, and matching white door panels.

Equipment includes a blue colored dash with all the factory gauges and controls, blue carpet and seatbelts, a push-button radio, wood sport 3-spoke steering wheel, Beep Beep horn, chrome 4-speed shifter with wood knob, Road Runner emblems, and a lockable glovebox.

Exterior

This was a complete rotisserie restoration with new quarter panels, floor pans, and trunk pans as every nut and bolt was touched with the body and paint by a former show car painter for Ford, Donny Randolph.

The car is finished a brand-new coat in PPG base coat/clear coat in 2010, in B5 Blue paint with original style stripes and Road Runner decals, the factory twin bulges on the hood, a new white power convertible top, shiny chrome-finished bumpers and grill, dual exhaust outlets, as well as a pained trunk area and correct factory style trunk mat with spare tire.

The fit and finish has to be seen as the presentation on this “real” Road Runner convertible is beyond what we can write about it.

It is one of only 2128 made back in 1969 and who knows how few are left today and this may be the nicest of the 27 show cars of which only 7 have been found.

Conclusion

Only a handful of Plymouth Road runner convertibles were sold in the U.S. and this 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner Convertible we have here at Adventure Classic for sale really defines the muscle-car era.

Roadrunners are getting really rare, but when you figure in that this is having the 383 engine, 4-speed trans, convertible, white bucket seat interior, and a top-quality restoration, it is rally a vary collectable Plymouth you must have in your collection.

Over $100k invested in the car and is certainly one of the nicest Road Runner convertibles in the market.
