Car History

The Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac in generations from 1964 to 1974 model years. That first generation GTO was the muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era.

General Motors redesigned it's a-body for 1968, with a unique feature that was the body-color Endura front bumper. It was designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.

We have a driver quality project car. This 1968 Pontiac GTO here at Adventure Classics will require some attention to areas such as the vinyl top, left and rear upper quarter panels. It has that great look, is a real 242 Vin code, that only real ones have, and has a lot of originality to it.

Engine & Drivetrain

It wouldn't be a '68 GTO without a correct YS coded big block engine, and ours has that covered with the 400 cubic inch V8 engine under the hood. It looks nice in the engine bay with its correct turquoise block, shiny chrome valve covers, and matching chrome air cleaner top with the 400 decal on it.

The big V8 inhales deeply with a four-barrel carburetor on top of the intake manifold and exhales with authority as the big tube headers, dual exhaust, power steering and brakes, and most other stock looking parts in the period correct engine compartment.

The engine has a lower end noise in it at higher revs so some engine work can be expected.

Interior

Our GTO has aqua colored twin front bucket seats with a matching interior that has all the right vintage details like the wood-like paneling on the dash, tinted glass, factory radio, factory and accessory gauges, clock, three-spoke wood steering wheel, Hurst Dual-Gate automatic his/her shifter with the wood handle, factory console, and aqua color matched carpeting.

Exterior

The GTO is the father of the muscle car, and nothing showcases a muscle car better than an aqua paint job like the GTO we have, plus the addition of the black vinyl top.

Ours has the Endurance front bumper (exclusive to real-deal GTOs in '68), Hide-Away Headlights, Hood Tac, Dual Mirrors, and the wide track look Pontiac is known for. It even has a full sized spare tire and wheel as well as the trunk mat in the trunk.

The GTO rides on Pontiac factory 5-spoke mag wheels and BF Goodrich Radial TA tires with great sounds coming out the dual tips on each side of the rear bumper.

Conclusion

The 1968 GTO was selected Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968, and you can have your own when you purchase this driver quality GTO from us here at Adventure Classics.

It will be a great project car that you can drive and still enjoy while you take it to the next level without breaking the bank on the purchase price alone.
