Car History

Check your Popular Mechanics or Motor Trend magazine from the 50's and 60's and you'll find ads for the EMPI kit to build in your garage. Wow! Everyone in the VW world knows EMPI as a supplier of quality aftermarket race parts. That's still going on today but EMPI started out as one of the original converters of Volkswagens into what came to be known as Dune Buggies, building kits and cars years before Bruce Meyers came up with the Manx.

This EMPI Sportster dune buggy we have here at Adventure Classics is very rare and features a red-painted steel body with huge rear tires, mag wheels all the way around, Volkswagen engine and tranny, and built on a shortened Volkswagen Beetle pan.

Engine & Drivetrain

Power comes from a Volkswagen flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle and is a great running and driving buggy with a great sound. It starts right up and drives great every time.

Additional equipment includes the fuel tank mounted in the bed, coil over shocks, modified engine, full header system with a Supertrap type muffler system.

The staggered-width five-spoke wheels are wrapped in black sidewall tires up front with 33x12.50x15 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires out back.

Interior

Beachy plush with an interior you can hose or vacuum out easily with a saddle blanket covering the seats that has storage behind them and additional features include a fold-down windshield, roll hoop, and custom wood bed accents on the rear.

A three-spoke steering wheel with polished accents fronts a dashboard housing a 90-mph speedometer and a tachometer.

Exterior

The Sportster featured a steel body with a rear bed mounted to a shortened Volkswagen Beetle pan and was available either as a kit or assembled by the factory. This example is finished in red with paint in a shiny red with oak trim on the bed.

This is a solid steel body with that one of a kind EMPI look. These steel bodied EMPIs are tough with fenders that will easily support a man's weight and a frame and body that can take the bumps and grinds that shatters fiberglass.

Additional features include a fold-down windshield, a chrome roll hoop, wood bed accents, taillights from a 1964 Ford Mustang.

Conclusion

The EMPI Sportster dune buggy we have here at Adventure Classics is very rare and is the one you want at the beach, lake, camp or around town. An Empi is also perfect as a tow companion for your motorhome and is guaranteed to start a conversation wherever you travel.
